Synopsis:
In The Three Mothers, Anna Malaika Tubbs reframes American history by centering Alberta King, Louise Little, and Berdis Baldwin—the women whose labor and vision shaped Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and James Baldwin. With a sociologist’s rigor and a storyteller’s clarity, Tubbs weaves archival research and intimate portraiture to show how leadership is cultivated through caregiving, faith, protection, and hard choices made under racist and sexist constraint. The result is a moving narrative of what counts as “history” and who gets credit for it.
